Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag), has conducted the isbat session to determine the date of Eid al-Adha 1444H/2023M. The result announced that Eid al-Adha 1444H falls on June 29, 2023.
Eid al-Adha is observed on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah 1444H. To determine the date of Eid al-Adha, the Indonesian government holds an isbat session, which took place at the end of the month of Zulkaidah, or today, Sunday (June 18, 2023). The isbat session was held at the HM Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs building, Jakarta.

Previously, through a Joint Decree by Three Ministers, it was determined that Eid al-Adha would fall on Thursday, June 29, 2023. The determination of Eid al-Adha was made by monitoring the sighting of the crescent moon in various locations, followed by the isbat session.
In the press conference held at 19:05 WIB, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs of Indonesia, Dr. H. Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi, M.Si, announced the date of the 1st of Dhu al-Hijjah 1444H.
“On the date of 29th of Zulkaidah 1444H, which corresponds to Sunday, June 18, 2023 AD, the height of the crescent moon in all regions of Indonesia above the horizon ranges from 0° 11.78′ to 2° 21.57′, with an elongation angle between 4.39° to 4.93°,” said Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi.
In determining the Islamic month, the Ministry of Religious Affairs uses the criteria of MABIMS. The initial determination of the Islamic month using these criteria refers to the crescent moon’s height of 3 degrees and elongation of 6.4 degrees.
“The result of the isbat session that we have agreed upon is that the 1st of Dhu al-Hijjah falls on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 AD, and Eid al-Adha falls on Thursday, June 29, 2023,” said Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi.
This isbat session was attended by several Ambassadors of Friendly Nations, the Chairman of Commission VIII of the Indonesian Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The session was also attended by the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (BIG), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Bosscha Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), the Planetarium, Astronomy Experts from Islamic Organizations, relevant institutions and agencies, members of the Hijri Calendar Unification Team of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the leaders of Islamic Community Organizations and Islamic Boarding Schools.
Therefore, the government has officially announced that Eid al-Adha will be observed on June 29, 2023.
