Hospital should conduct study regarding alleged malpractice: Ministry

Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – The Indonesian Health Ministry urged the medical committee and management of a hospital in Bekasi, West Java, suspected of committing malpractice, to review the suitability of actions taken on patients with applicable standard operating procedures.

“The medical committee and the hospital management should carry out a study,” the ministry’s head of communication and public service bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, stated in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Tarmizi, the hospital management should also convey details of the review of actions taken and the applicable standard operating procedures to the family of a patient suspected of being a victim of malpractice.

She noted that her side has not received detailed information regarding alleged malpractice that caused the death of a child at a hospital in Bekasi.

Allegations of malpractice involving a child patient in Bekasi emerged after the patient’s family reported hospital officials and doctors treating their child to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) on September 29.

The report was based on the child’s diagnosis of brain stem death after undergoing a tonsillectomy at the hospital. The patient then died on October 2.

“The patient has experienced what we suspect is a failure in health procedure, which we can consider to be malpractice or negligence,” the family’s lawyer, Cahaya Christmanto Anak Ampun, remarked.

Meanwhile, the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimsus) of the Jakarta Police would immediately summon and conduct an investigation of the parties related to the alleged malpractice.

“The police report has been received by the Unit 1 Investigation Team of the Trade and Industry Sub-Directorate of Ditreskrimsus Polda Metro Jaya,” Special Criminal Investigation Director, Senior Commissioner Ade Safri Simanjuntak, noted in a statement on October 3.

He stated that an investigation would be conducted regarding the alleged criminal act reported.

He remarked that the plan to summon the witnesses was scheduled for this week.

“Our team has scheduled to invite the witnesses and accuser to clarify this matter,” he noted.
