Vatican Ambassador Mgr Piero Arrives in Timika for Official Visit

Timika, Indonesianpost.com – The Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia, Monsignor (Mgr) Piero Pioppo, received a warm welcome from the residents of Mimika District in Central Papua upon his arrival on Tuesday.

At Mozes Kilangin Timika Airport, the ambassador was greeted with a traditional dance performed by the Kamoro Tribe, showcasing the local culture.

Mimika District Head Johannes Rettob expressed that the arrival of Mgr Piero and his entourage was a significant honor for all Catholics in Papua. “The visit of the Vatican ambassador is crucial in strengthening the relationship between the Catholic Church, the local government, and the people of Mimika,” Rettob said.

Mgr Piero Pioppo also expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic reception, particularly from the Catholic community who gathered to welcome him. “Thank you for the very lively welcome. Thank you, Timika,” he said.

The ambassador is scheduled to preside over the ordination of Bishop Bernardus Bofitwos Baru of Timika on Wednesday, May 14. Rettob, who also leads the Timika Bishop Ordination Trust, stated that the ordination mass will be attended by around 10,000 Catholics from Central Papua and Papua provinces.

“The presence of Catholics from various regions reflects the strong sense of brotherhood within the Mimika community,” Rettob noted, assuring that local authorities would ensure the security and comfort of attendees during the ordination ceremony.
