Indonesia Offers Diplomatic Support for India-Pakistan Peace Process

Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – Foreign Minister Sugiono stated on Friday that Indonesia is prepared to act as a mediator in efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan, should both parties request its involvement.

“Our 1945 Constitution mandates us to actively promote world peace,” Sugiono said in a statement issued in Jakarta.

He emphasized that any diplomatic initiative must align with Indonesia’s constitutional principles.

“If we are requested to do anything that aims to create global peace, we will actively participate. That’s it,” Sugiono said in response to a question on Indonesia’s potential mediating role.

Sugiono also expressed Indonesia’s hope that tensions between India and Pakistan would ease and that both countries would pursue dialogue to resolve their differences.

India and Pakistan are currently observing a ceasefire agreement, effective from 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 10, suspending all military activities on land, sea, and air.

“We hope the conflict can de-escalate soon, because war, wherever and by whomever, will not bring any benefits,” he said.

Sugiono added that President Prabowo Subianto has consistently urged conflicting nations to seek common ground and prioritize cooperation for the benefit of their people.

Tensions between the two South Asian neighbors escalated after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting what it described as “nine terrorist locations” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The operation followed a deadly terrorist attack near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which India blamed on Pakistan. (BL/Antara)
