The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning for potential heavy to extreme rainfall expected to hit most parts of Indonesia on Friday.

In a statement delivered via BMKG’s official YouTube channel, weather forecaster Alya Sausan said that heavy to extreme rains are likely to drench Banten and Jakarta.

Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted to occur across Lampung, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Moving to the weather forecast in major cities across Sumatra, Banda Aceh is predicted to experience partly cloudy skies, while Tanjung Pinang will remain cloudy. Thick clouds are expected in Medan, Pekanbaru, Jambi, and Pangkalpinang. “Padang may experience haze or mist, while Bengkulu and Palembang are expected to see light rain,” Alya noted.

Residents in Bandar Lampung have been advised to stay alert for possible thunderstorms accompanying the rainfall.

Across Java Island, moderate rain is forecast for Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Surabaya, while Serang and Yogyakarta may experience rain accompanied by lightning.

In Kalimantan, Pontianak and Palangka Raya are predicted to be cloudy, while Samarinda and Banjarmasin will be mostly overcast. “Light rain is expected in Tanjung Selor,” she added.

Over in the Bali and Nusa Tenggara regions, light rain may fall in Denpasar and Kupang, while Mataram will likely receive moderate rainfall.

In Sulawesi, Manado is expected to be cloudy, Kendari and Gorontalo overcast, and Mamuju will see light rain. “Makassar may see hazy conditions, while Palu is expected to experience mist or smoke,” she explained.

For the Maluku and Papua regions, Ternate is predicted to be mostly cloudy, while Ambon is expected to see light rain. In Papua, Jayapura will be cloudy and Sorong overcast, while light rain is forecast for Manokwari and Jayawijaya. Nabire and Merauke may experience moderate rainfall.

BMKG also reported the detection of a tropical cyclone seed, coded 91S, located in the southern Indian Ocean near Sumbawa, which has a high probability of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 to 72 hours.

The tropical disturbance has contributed to an increase in wind speeds exceeding 25 knots across the southern Indian Ocean, from East Java to Sumba Island, and extends over the waters of Bali, NTB, NTT, and northward up to Madura and Flores.
