Indonesia’s 10th and 12th vice president Jusuf Kalla (JK), who also serves as chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI), has called on the public to make Ramadan a momentum to sharpen vigilance while reinforcing social and economic resilience amid increasingly challenging conditions affecting communities and the environment.

According to JK, the situation facing Indonesians today requires shared awareness to keep working hard and supporting one another—not only in worship, but also in sustaining social cohesion and strengthening the economy.

“Given the current situation in society and the state of nature, Ramadan should encourage people to be more cautious,” JK said during an Acoustic Training for Mosques event attended by around 109 mosque management board (DKM) participants at Paragon Community Hub in Jakarta on Sunday.

He stressed that economic recovery and development demand consistent, long-term effort, even as the challenges ahead remain far from easy.

JK also urged the public to keep one another in their prayers so that economic activity can continue to run steadily.

“We have worked hard to build conditions like this. Many economists say we are indeed facing a difficult situation,” he said.

He emphasized that Ramadan should not be understood solely as a season for personal devotion, but also as an opportunity to strengthen solidarity and build society more broadly.

“So Ramadan is not only about worship, but also about how we build society,” he said.
