Trade Minister Launches Tuna Exports from West Sumatra to UAE

Padang, Indonesianpost.com – Trade Minister Budi Santoso officially launched the first tuna export shipment from PT Dempo Andalas Sumatera in Padang, West Sumatra, on Friday. The shipment, weighing 9.3 tons and valued at Rp1.87 billion (US$112,972), is headed to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Today marks the first export of tuna from PT Dempo Andalas Sumatera to the UAE. We hope this will be the start of continued exports,” the minister stated.

Minister Santoso highlighted that tuna exports from Indonesia are substantial, and the Ministry of Trade will continue to support entrepreneurs in expanding their export markets, including for other marine products.

The government is focusing on the European Union as a primary target for future tuna exports.

In addition, Minister Santoso announced that Indonesia and Tunisia are set to sign an agreement in mid-June 2025 to further expand the tuna export market.

To achieve the 7.1 percent export growth target by 2026, Santoso emphasized the importance of various efforts, including the UMKM Bisa Ekspor (MSMEs Can Export) program, which has proven effective in boosting exports from Indonesia.

As of April 2025, the Ministry of Trade recorded Rp920 billion (US$55.6 million) in export transactions through the program, involving 388 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

During his visit to Padang, Minister Santoso encouraged local governors and regional leaders to leverage the program, noting its potential to stimulate economic growth. He urged West Sumatra to take part in the UMKM Bisa Ekspor program, given the region’s significant export potential, particularly in tuna. (BL/ANTARA)
