Controversy: LGBT Activists from ASEAN Countries to Hold Gathering in Jakarta
Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – The lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community from ASEAN countries is set to hold a gathering in Jakarta from July 17 to 21, 2023. The event is organized by the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus, an organization under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2021, in collaboration with Arus Pelangi and the Asia Forum.
“Are you queer activists based in Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Singapore, and other countries in Southeast Asia? Join us for the ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week (AAW) this July,” said the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus in an announcement on Instagram, @aseansoegicaucus, as quoted by Republika.co.id in Jakarta on Monday (07/10/2023).

The meeting, titled ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week (AAW), serves as a platform for Southeast Asian LGBTQ activists to connect and strengthen their advocacy efforts. The exact location of the event has not been specified by the organizing committee. However, they have provided information about the activities to be conducted during the five-day event.
“The AAW is expected to serve as a tool for LGBT activists in the region to find their own alternative regionalism,” said the joint announcement by Arus Pelangi and the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus in their Instagram post.
