ASEAN FMs Set to Discuss Regional and Global Concerns Before Summit
Kuala Lumpur, Indonesianpost.com – Retrieved from Antara (5/23/2025), ASEAN foreign ministers gathered on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur to address critical regional and international issues, aligning with Malaysia’s theme for its ASEAN Chairmanship: “ASEAN 2025: Inclusiveness and Sustainability.”
The meeting, chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, centered on advancing the ASEAN Community, including a presentation by the ASEAN Secretariat on the progress of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).
As highlighted by the Malaysian Foreign Ministry, the ministers also deliberated on the follow-up actions to the ASEAN Leaders’ review of the Five-Point Consensus on Myanmar, which was spearheaded by Malaysia.
In anticipation of the 46th ASEAN Summit, the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting also covered ASEAN’s external relations, including its engagement with external partners.
One of the key topics discussed was the full membership of Timor-Leste in ASEAN, particularly the steps for its compliance with ASEAN legal frameworks and guidelines.
The outcomes of the meeting will serve as the foundation for discussions at the 46th ASEAN Summit, the 2nd ASEAN–GCC Summit, and the ASEAN–GCC–China Summit, all set to take place on 26-27 May 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
ASEAN Foreign Ministers, including Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to participate in a series of meetings leading up to the summit.
In addition to the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, several other important sessions took place at KLCC on Sunday, including the 25th ASEAN Economic Community Council, the 29th ASEAN Political and Security Community Council, the 36th ASEAN Coordinating Council, and the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Meeting.
