Jakarta, Indoneesianpost.com – Reported by Antara (May 24, 2025), Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar.

Speaking at the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, part of the 46th ASEAN Summit held on Saturday (May 24) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, Malaysia, Minister Retno emphasized the importance of ASEAN’s collective efforts in restoring peace and stability in the region.

“Indonesia remains steadfast in pushing for a peaceful solution to the Myanmar crisis. Achieving regional stability can only be realized if ASEAN stands united, guided by consensus and solidarity,” she stated in a press release on Sunday.

She reiterated the necessity of fully implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus (5PC), which was agreed upon after Myanmar’s military coup in 2021. The 5PC focuses on halting violence, increasing humanitarian aid, and ensuring an inclusive dialogue involving all parties in Myanmar.

Minister Retno also expressed support for the initiatives led by Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair for this year, in facilitating Myanmar’s internal conflict resolution process. She reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to continue contributing to the restoration of democracy and stability in Myanmar.

“ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity. To address the Myanmar crisis, we must speak with one voice and act with one purpose to ensure the full implementation of the 5PC,” she emphasized.

The Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus is an informal platform where ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the Special Envoy to Myanmar gather to discuss developments in Myanmar and push for more effective action on the 5PC.

The civil war in Myanmar has been ongoing since the 2021 coup, which ousted the democratically elected government and led to the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi. The coup triggered widespread resistance, with civilians joining armed guerrilla groups to challenge the military junta. Various ethnic groups have also taken up arms, seeking independence from the central government. (BL)
