Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – Cultural Affairs Minister Fadli Zon has highlighted the role of kolintang, a traditional instrument from Minahasa, North Sulawesi, as a key tool in Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy, aimed at strengthening international relations.

Zon confirmed that kolintang was officially recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee in Paraguay.

“Kolintang serves as a powerful medium for promoting Indonesia’s global image through soft power,” Zon remarked on Sunday.

He emphasized that music, being a universal language, helps foster peace and friendship among nations.

UNESCO also pointed out the instrument’s similarities to the balafon, noting the shared materials, design, function, and cultural significance of both instruments, which symbolize unity, mutual respect, and harmony.

Zon stressed the importance of collaboration in preserving cultural heritage and praised the National Kolintang Players Association (PINKAN) and singer Ita Purnamasari for their joint efforts in the song Oh Minahasa and a cross-cultural performance with Haiti’s balafon player, Neo Akbar.

He further stated that Indonesia, with its rich cultural heritage, has a responsibility to protect and celebrate its traditions. During the event, Zon also performed O Ina Ni Keke, a traditional North Sumatran folk song, accompanied by both kolintang and balafon.

PINKAN Chairperson Penny Iriana Marsetio expressed that the performances were a fulfillment of their promise to the minister following the UNESCO recognition.

“We are committed to preserving kolintang,” she assured. (BL)
