Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has set a target for the capital to operate 10,000 electric TransJakarta buses by 2029, calling the push part of a broader effort to expand environmentally friendly public transportation while improving service quality.

“My target is that by 2029, the 10,000 Jakarta buses will already be electric,” Pramono said in Ancol, North Jakarta, on Thursday (Feb. 5, 2026).

Pramono said expanding the bus flcet, including electric units, was increasingly necessary as public transport ridership in Jakarta continued to rise. He acknowledged that many residents have complained about longer waiting times for TransJakarta services.

He cited two main factors behind the issue. First, the rainy season often disrupts operations. Second, passenger numbers have surged following a policy offering free fares to 15 eligible groups.

“Right now, the number of people using public transportation in Jakarta is increasing rapidly. That’s what is causing people to wait longer,” he said.

The Jakarta administration has said it will continue adding more buses to help reduce passenger waiting times.
