Quick Summaries
  • Bulog says it is preparing to export up to 1 million tons of rice to Southeast Asian markets in 2026 after Indonesia claimed food self-sufficiency.
  • Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea are listed as priority destinations, with Bulog citing proximity and existing demand.
  • Separately, Bulog has been assigned to supply rice for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims, including a planned 4,000-ton shipment timed for March.

Perum Bulog, Indonesia’s state logistics agency, says it is preparing to export up to 1 million tons of rice to Southeast Asian countries in 2026, following the government’s claim that the country has achieved food self-sufficiency.

Bulog president director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani announced the plan during the Talkshow Panen Fest 2026 in Jakarta on Saturday, saying the export drive is aimed at expanding markets for Indonesian food products while strengthening the country’s position in regional trade.

Rizal said Bulog’s main target destinations include Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea.

He said the countries were selected due to their geographic proximity to Indonesia and because their rice demand could still be met through trade cooperation.

To support the plan, Rizal said Bulog has coordinated with Indonesia’s trade attachés and military representatives in the destination countries to smoothen diplomatic engagement and distribution for the export program.

Special assignment for Hajj pilgrims

Beyond exports to neighboring markets, Rizal said Bulog has also been assigned to prepare rice supplies for Indonesian Hajj pilgrims in 2026.

He said Bulog is planning to export 4,000 tons of rice to meet the consumption needs of pilgrims who are accustomed to rice as a daily staple.

Rizal added that the shipment plan would be finalized after a limited coordination meeting, with a March delivery target to ensure logistics needs are met on time.

He expressed confidence that Bulog can meet both export targets—regional shipments and the Hajj-related supply—through cross-ministry coordination and support from relevant stakeholders.
