JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed on a contract for Indonesia to procure the BrahMos missile system, marking a key step in strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.

The agreement is listed as point 12 in a series of official documents released following a bilateral meeting between Prabowo and Modi at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (July 7, 2026). The document confirms a procurement contract between BrahMos Aerospace and Indonesia’s Defense Ministry.

The BrahMos deal is part of a broader set of 16 cooperation agreements signed during the meeting, reflecting deepening strategic ties between the two countries across multiple sectors.

Another defense-related agreement, listed as point 13, covers the procurement of air-to-air missile (AAM) systems between India’s Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Indonesia’s defense firm Republikorp.

The signing and announcement of these agreements formed a central part of Modi’s state visit to Indonesia, attended by senior officials and delegations from both sides.

Proceedings began with the exchange of a document extending cooperation between Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), focusing on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space.

The document was presented by BRIN head Arif Satria and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in the Credential Room of the Merdeka Palace, before the announcement of additional agreements.

Ambassador’s remarks

Ahead of the visit, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty underscored ongoing discussions on defense cooperation, including the BrahMos system.

“Defense cooperation remains an important part of our ongoing discussions. As widely reported, Indonesia has expressed interest in the BrahMos missile system,” Chakravorty said during a press briefing at the Indian Embassy in Jakarta on Friday (July 3, 2026), as reported by ANTARA.

He noted that negotiations had reached an advanced stage, with both sides working toward finalizing key agreements in the near term.

“Discussions with Indonesia have progressed significantly. We are optimistic about concluding several arrangements related to the BrahMos system soon,” he added.

Chakravorty described the BrahMos system as a cost-effective and reliable platform, making it a suitable option for countries such as Indonesia seeking to strengthen their defense capabilities.

India has previously finalized a BrahMos export deal with the Philippines. According to a 2023 Reuters report, talks with Indonesia had also reached an advanced stage, with a potential deal estimated at between US$200 million and US$350 million (approximately Rp3.3 trillion to Rp5.9 trillion).
