Industrial Parks Advised to Strengthen Environmental Policies

Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – Reported by Antara, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has called on industrial parks to take stronger action in managing their environmental impact, particularly in controlling air pollution and handling waste properly.

“Industrial parks are not just economic powerhouses, they are also hotspots for environmental risks. If we don’t address this issue seriously, it is the local communities that will bear the brunt,” Nurofiq said during a review of 48 industrial parks in the Greater Jakarta area on Tuesday.

The review aimed to identify pollution sources contributing to the worsening air quality in Jakarta. Following inspections in North Jakarta and Bekasi district, a field verification will take place at the Pulogadung industrial park in East Jakarta from June 16 to 20, 2025.

As the oldest and largest industrial park in Indonesia, Pulogadung is home to around 370 tenants. However, only 39 of these tenants participated in the 2024–2025 Environmental Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER). Out of those, six received a Red rating, with one tenant’s operations suspended due to severe violations.

“Weak oversight by the park’s management is a major factor in the decline of environmental performance. If this is not addressed, it could lead to pollution of the air, water, and soil around the area,” Minister Nurofiq warned.

To resolve these issues, the ministry has called for a coordinated effort from both industrial park managers and tenants. This includes installing an automatic wastewater quality monitoring system linked to the Electronic Environmental Approval Reporting Information System. The ministry also emphasized the need for continuous emission monitoring systems, Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations, regular publication of environmental data, and the appointment of certified environmental operational officers for each tenant.

In addition, the ministry stressed the importance of managing hazardous and toxic waste in compliance with regulations. Periodic environmental audits and routine reporting of environmental performance to the Ministry of Environment and local governments will also be required to ensure accountability. (BL)
