Jakarta — The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) has announced a plan to renovate and revitalize the Mohammad Husni (MH) Thamrin Museum on Jalan Kenari, Central Jakarta, transforming it into a new cultural and educational landmark for the capital city.
“I would like to inform everyone that the Jakarta Government has decided to renovate and revitalize the MH Thamrin Museum on Jalan Kenari, making it a new icon of Jakarta,” said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo during the 2026 Betawi Eid Festival held at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday.
He explained that the renovation budget has already been allocated, and the revitalization work will begin soon.
The revitalization aims to enhance the museum’s appeal not only to Jakarta residents but also to students from across the country visiting the capital for educational trips.
“The funding is ready, and we will start soon. This will become a new landmark for Jakarta,” Pramono said.
He also added that the Jakarta Government has instructed the Education Office to include visits to the MH Thamrin Museum in school field trip programs for students ranging from elementary to high school levels.
With this initiative, the museum is expected to become a must-visit destination that introduces young generations to Betawi’s historical figures and heritage.
Beyond physical restoration, the museum’s revitalization is part of a broader effort to preserve history and honor one of Betawi’s most influential intellectuals, MH Thamrin.
“This is our effort to pay tribute to MH Thamrin, who made an enormous contribution to the development, culture, and civilization of both Betawi and Jakarta,” Pramono said.
The MH Thamrin Museum has long been recognized as one of the city’s historical sites that preserves the legacy of the prominent Betawi figure.
However, its current facilities are considered outdated and need improvement to serve as a more modern and engaging educational hub.
With the upcoming renovation, the Jakarta Government hopes the museum will become more interactive, informative, and attractive—strengthening Jakarta’s identity as a city that embraces modern progress while honoring local history and culture.
The initiative also reflects the government’s commitment to advancing Jakarta’s cultural and history-based education sector while promoting the achievements of local heroes to the younger generation.
Previously, the Jakarta Government announced the allocation of Rp15 billion for the museum’s revitalization project located in Senen, Central Jakarta.
“In last week’s meeting, I decided to revitalize the MH Thamrin Museum with a budget of Rp15 billion,” Pramono said earlier in South Jakarta on March 2, 2026.
He expressed his hope that the project will not only upgrade the museum’s physical facilities but also boost its educational role for both the public and visiting students.
Furthermore, Pramono wants Jakarta residents and visitors to go beyond popular tourist spots such as the National Monument (Monas), Ancol, or Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), by also visiting the MH Thamrin Museum to learn about Betawi heritage.
“I truly hope people will learn from MH Thamrin, and we will ensure the museum becomes a place worthy of studying Jakarta’s history and culture,” Pramono concluded.
