Indonesian Lawmaker Supports Investigation into Circus Abuse Allegations
Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – An Indonesian lawmaker has expressed strong support for the Ministry of Human Rights’ recommendation to investigate alleged severe human rights violations involving Oriental Circus Indonesia (OCI).
“We fully support the Ministry’s recommendation. This case goes beyond past abuse; it highlights a systemic failure by the state to protect children from exploitation under the guise of art and entertainment,” stated Mafirion, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR), in a statement on Thursday.
He underscored that the recommendation is a crucial step toward initiating a more comprehensive investigation.
Earlier, the Ministry of Human Rights urged the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to probe the allegations against OCI.
Former performers at the circus claimed they were recruited at a young age and forced to work without legal protection.

“This is a clear indication of human trafficking. The state must assess whether these actions constitute gross human rights violations. Corporations cannot shield themselves behind ‘economic agreements,’” Mafirion remarked.
The Ministry also recommended that the National Police initiate a criminal investigation into the case.
Mafirion emphasized the need for legal proceedings to continue, despite OCI no longer being operational, to secure justice for the victims.
He called on the police to identify those responsible, both individually and institutionally.
“Were there violations of the Child Protection Law, the Criminal Code, or the Law on the Eradication of Human Trafficking? We will press the police to take action,” he concluded. (BL/ANTARA)
