The United States Department of Justice has released millions of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, including photos, videos, and email archives, making them publicly accessible.

The files have sparked intense discussion over the past few days following their release last weekend. Among the names mentioned in the documents are several notable Indonesian figures.

What Are the Epstein Files?

The “Epstein Files” refer to a trove of documents published by the U.S. Department of Justice on Friday, January 31, 2026. These include investigation reports and emails that served as evidence in Epstein’s court cases.

The department released more than three million additional pages as part of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on November 19, 2025.

The additional files feature over 2,000 videos and 180,000 images. They are now available to the public on the Department of Justice’s official website. However, officials warned that some files could contain doctored images, false claims, or explicit material.

The department stated that more than 500 attorneys and reviewers had examined the materials, with some photos and texts redacted.

Who Was Jeffrey Epstein?

Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier who faced charges of sex trafficking involving underage girls.

Epstein, a wealthy money manager with extensive connections, had long been shadowed by allegations of sexual abuse of minors. He was known to have ties with both Republican President Donald Trump and former Democratic President Bill Clinton.

He was arrested on July 6, 2019, and pleaded not guilty to accusations of sex trafficking involving dozens of girls, some as young as 14, from 2002 to 2005. Epstein was later found unresponsive in his jail cell with marks on his neck, and his death was ruled a suicide.

Indonesian Figures Mentioned in the Epstein Files

The documents reportedly include several Indonesian businessmen, one of whom is Hary Tanoesoedibjo.

Hary, widely known as Hary Tanoe, is a businessman, politician, and owner of the MNC Group media conglomerate. He is also the founder and chairman of the Perindo Party and previously affiliated with both the NasDem and Hanura parties.

His name appears in a record of conversations between a “Confidential Human Source” and the FBI regarding his billionaire status and involvement in Trump hotel developments.

The document alleges that Hary “purchased a Trump property in Beverly Hills” at an “inflated” price. ABC Indonesia attempted to contact Hary for comment but received no response at the time of publication.

The same report also mentions another Indonesian name, Eka Widjaja, who allegedly bought a luxury Trump property in Beverly Hills for USD 9.5 million in cash.

Eka Tjipta Widjaja was the founder of Sinar Mas Group and one of Indonesia’s most prominent tycoons. He passed away in 2019.

Another Indonesian, Kafrawi Yuliantono, is also listed in the documents. In one of the email archives addressed to Epstein, Kafrawi expressed his desire to apply for a job at one of Epstein’s estates.

“Honestly, I am very interested in working with and for you at one of your properties, whether in New York or Florida,” he wrote.

“I sincerely hope for the opportunity to join your team, help manage your residence, and travel with you.”

ABC Indonesia contacted Kafrawi to ask why he wanted to work for Epstein.

“That happened a long time ago, and I wasn’t selected,” he said. “Many people had the same opportunity to apply for the job, but I was just unlucky.”

The email identified Kafrawi as a Banquet Operation Manager at JW Marriott Hotel Medan. The hotel confirmed that he is no longer employed there but did not comment on whether he had previously worked at the property.

Implications for Those Named in the Epstein Files

Simply appearing in an email or document within the “Epstein Files” does not imply any wrongdoing or connection to Jeffrey Epstein.

Ties Between Trump and Hary Tanoe

Business ties between Donald Trump and Hary Tanoe are not new.

In 2017, Hary told ABC that the two were jointly developing two Trump-branded projects — one in Bali and another in Bogor, West Java.

The Trump International Golf Club Lido, located in Bogor, opened in March last year. Local opposition had previously been reported against the Bali resort project.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was caught on a “hot mic” discussing Trump’s son, Eric, during the Gaza Peace Summit last October.

“We’ll find a better place,” Prabowo told Trump.

“I’ll have Eric contact you,” Trump replied.

In an interview with CNN following the incident, Eric Trump confirmed that the conversation was about their Indonesia real estate ventures, saying the projects were still ongoing.

Other Global Figures Named in the Epstein Files

Among the millions of documents, U.S. President Donald Trump’s name appears hundreds of times — including in an FBI list referencing “lewd information sources.”

So far, there is no evidence threatening Trump’s political standing, nor have the files revealed new findings about his well-known association with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.

Most references to Trump appear in public documents, media reports, and minor mentions in emails.

Other notable figures include Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who has denied any involvement with Epstein or related parties.

“Thank God, as the email mentioned, it was more than a decade ago, and I have no connection whatsoever with anyone involved in that exchange, especially Epstein,” Anwar wrote in a Facebook post.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name also appears in one email exchange between Epstein and billionaire Anil Ambani.

Preliminary reviews have uncovered emails Epstein sent to former Prince Andrew and Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon.

Other messages show that billionaire Elon Musk and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick discussed visiting Epstein’s private island.

The files also include internal FBI correspondence detailing unverified allegations made against Donald Trump.
