  • Iran’s envoy in Jakarta says Iran and Indonesia, as “middle powers,” can help promote stability in their respective regions.
  • Boroujerdi says Iran sought to keep a recent 12-day conflict from escalating into a wider regional war.
  • If Indonesia and Iran deepen dialogue, he argues, it could strengthen regional stability while supporting Palestinian self-determination through democratic choice.

Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, said Iran and Indonesia have an important role to play as middle powers in promoting peace and stability in West Asia and Southeast Asia. He made the remarks in a special interview with ANTARA on Friday.

Boroujerdi said both countries occupy strategic positions in their respective regions and could make a meaningful contribution to regional security. He pointed to Iran’s efforts to prevent a 12-day conflict launched by Israel and its allies against Iran from widening into a broader regional war.

“Iran has tried its best so that the war does not become regional and remains limited to Iran and the Zionist regime of Israel,” Boroujerdi said.

On Indonesia’s position, Boroujerdi welcomed Jakarta’s support for Palestinian rights, saying it placed Indonesia on what he described as the right side of history.

He proposed that Iran and Indonesia step up dialogue and explore new initiatives to advance peace and security across their regions. Boroujerdi also voiced skepticism about the prospects of existing peace initiatives related to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, arguing that agreements over more than 75 years have failed to deliver lasting outcomes.

“We will not obstruct any peace process. We are only assessing the situation. We say it will not work,” Boroujerdi said. He added that lasting peace would require Palestinians to be allowed to decide their own political future through democratic means.

“If you want something to work in this region, you must choose democracy, so the Palestinian people can choose what they want,” he said, adding that solutions imposed by countries he characterized as not neutral would not succeed.

He reiterated that closer cooperation between Iran and Indonesia could help reinforce regional stability and strengthen calls for a more balanced international approach to resolving conflict.
