- Indonesia is exploring participation in Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet and submarine projects as part of expanding strategic ties.
- Talks between Jakarta and Ankara covered defense, trade, AI, and energy, with a shared target of $10 billion in trade.
- Both countries reaffirm commitment to deeper cooperation, including on global issues and regional stability.
Jakarta – Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) that his meetings in Indonesia were highly productive, covering a broad range of issues from defense cooperation and energy to artificial intelligence and the halal food industry.
In a statement shared on his NSosyal social media account following his official visit, Fidan noted that discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Foreign Minister Sugiono focused on ongoing cooperation as well as future joint initiatives between the two countries. Indonesia marked the second stop of Fidan’s regional tour after Singapore.
“Following our visit to Singapore, today’s meeting with our strategic partner Indonesia has been highly productive in advancing our multidimensional agenda,” Fidan said, as quoted by Daily Sabah.
According to Fidan, the talks addressed collaboration in defense industries, transportation, energy, artificial intelligence, and the halal food sector, along with concrete steps to further strengthen bilateral relations. He added that both sides reviewed key projects aimed at achieving a bilateral trade target of 10 billion US dollars, equivalent to around Rp180 trillion.
The target had previously been set by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Prabowo during an earlier meeting. “We thoroughly evaluated projects that will help us reach the 10 billion US dollar trade volume target,” Fidan said.
He went on to highlight that the shared vision of both governments reflects a readiness to pursue more concrete and effective cooperation in the future. In April 2025, President Erdogan emphasized measures to increase bilateral trade in a balanced and mutually beneficial way toward the same target.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo praised Ankara’s role in regional affairs and expressed Indonesia’s interest in participating in Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet program as well as its submarine development projects. Turkey is currently developing its national submarine, the Reis-class.
“I invite Turkish companies to invest. As leaders of the Global South and strategic partners, Indonesia and Turkey must take responsibility in shaping a new global order,” Prabowo told Fidan. “Indonesia is interested in participating in the KAAN project and submarine development.”
The discussions also covered regional and international issues, particularly developments in the Gulf region and evolving strategic dynamics in the Asia-Pacific. Fidan said both sides exchanged views on global issues and reaffirmed close coordination on matters related to Palestine.
Fidan stressed that Turkey and Indonesia will continue their intensive cooperation as two friendly nations sharing common values and objectives. This aligns with the agreement between Erdogan and Prabowo to pursue mutually beneficial collaboration across sectors.
