Jakarta – A monumental 100-meter-long Chinese Muslim calligraphy artwork by renowned artist Prof. Yusuf Liu Baojun is being exhibited in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, as part of the International Minangkabau Literacy Festival (IMLF), marking the centennial of Jam Gadang.

The exhibition of Prof. Yusuf Liu Baojun’s calligraphy stands out as one of the highlights of the 100th anniversary celebrations of Jam Gadang and the IMLF. It serves as a cultural meeting point where art, literacy, heritage, and spiritual values converge, offering a meaningful experience for the public.

Bukittinggi Deputy Mayor Ibnu Asis expressed his appreciation for Yusuf Liu’s dedication and contribution in presenting Islamic calligraphy of exceptional artistic and spiritual value.

According to him, the works not only showcase aesthetic beauty but also convey profound spiritual messages.

“The sacred meanings contained in the Quran can be expressed through grand and visually striking calligraphic art. This exhibition not only demonstrates the richness of Islamic art but also promotes Bukittinggi as a cultural and tourism hub in the Minangkabau highlands,” he said.

He added that the exhibition aligns with the spirit of the IMLF in introducing Minangkabau culture and Bukittinggi’s tourism potential to an international audience.

West Sumatra Literacy Ambassador Harneli Mahyeldi encouraged the public, particularly Bukittinggi residents, to take advantage of this rare opportunity by visiting the exhibition.

“We invite everyone to come and witness these beautiful and meaningful calligraphy works. This exhibition is part of the Jam Gadang centennial celebration and the broader IMLF program,” she said.

Both officials appeared visibly impressed as they observed the monumental 100-meter calligraphy displayed at the exhibition venue.

They also took time to examine several other calligraphy pieces more closely while listening to explanations about the meanings and philosophies behind each work.

Prof. Yusuf Liu Baojun is an internationally recognized Chinese calligrapher and author currently based in Malaysia. To date, he has produced at least 37 books and hundreds of artworks.

His works are currently displayed at the Bung Hatta Palace Meeting Hall in Bukittinggi. Previously, he demonstrated the creation of a 25-meter calligraphy piece during the Wara-Wiri Creative Economy Festival (Feskraf) in Jakarta.

In addition to the exhibition, during the launch of 100 books as part of the IMLF, Yusuf Liu also introduced his latest book titled One Eternal Soul in Sumatra.
