Farewell to Sinead O’Connor: Procession Held by Irish Community
Jakarta, Indonesianpost.com – The family of pop star Sinead O’Connor called on the public to pay their final respects as her procession passed along the seaside in the town 20 kilometers (13 miles) south of Dublin. The Grammy-winning singer, famous for her song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” was found deceased in her London home last month. She passed away at the age of 56.

“Sinead loved living in Bray and loved the people there. With this procession, her family wants to acknowledge the outpouring of love for her from the people of Wicklow and beyond since she passed away last week,” the family said in a statement, quoted from RFI, Tuesday (8/8/2023).
The O’Connor family added that the public procession, passing by her former seaside home, would be followed by a private funeral. Mourners were invited to gather by the Bray seaside starting at 10:30 local time.
O’Connor’s death has sparked a wave of public sympathy worldwide and in Ireland. It has also brought to light moments when O’Connor criticized the Catholic Church and faced defamation by some individuals.
At the peak of the hill overlooking Bray’s coast, where O’Connor lived for 15 years, a World War II navigation sign for pilots spelling “Eire” in the Irish language was adorned with a heart and “Sinead” in tribute to the singer.
Several celebrities, such as Bob Geldof, Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, and Russell Crowe, have also expressed their condolences. At the time of her passing, O’Connor was working on a new album and planning a tour and film based on her autobiography “Rememberings.”

Gatherings in Dublin, Belfast, and other places in Ireland have been held to remember the singer. These often feature spontaneous renditions of her 1990 song “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
The Irish Times reported last week that an autopsy had been conducted to determine the cause of the singer’s death. However, according to London police, it was not deemed suspicious. In a statement, the London coroner’s court clerk said that the post-mortem report would not be available for several weeks.
