Quick Summaries
  • Indonesia and Australia signed a new security treaty in Jakarta, with leaders emphasizing closer cooperation in the security domain.
  • Foreign Minister Sugiono said the Danantara investment MoU signed at the same time is a separate agreement aimed at expanding economic cooperation.
  • Education cooperation, he added, is focused on capacity building such as Australian university campuses and exchanges, outside Danantara’s investment framework.

Foreign Minister Sugiono said the signing of an investment memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Danantara Indonesia and the Australian government—held alongside a security treaty—was a separate agreement.

Speaking after the signing of the Treaty on Common Security at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Friday, Sugiono stressed that the inclusion of the MoU was intended to broaden the scope of the two countries’ strategic cooperation, even though its substance is separate from the security deal.

According to him, the security treaty signed by President Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese focuses on cooperation in the security sector.

Meanwhile, the Danantara MoU relates to investment cooperation and stands on its own.

“So this treaty deals with security. At first we wanted to do it separately so it wouldn’t be confusing. That was the initial plan, but because this was seen as strategic—strategic in the sense of the cooperation—we signed it at the same time,” Sugiono said.

He revealed that the investment MoU had initially been scheduled to be signed separately.

However, both sides viewed the investment partnership as strategically important in strengthening bilateral ties, so the signing was held at the same time.

Sugiono said the MoU is an initial step to open up investment opportunities between the two countries, which will later be translated into further technical cooperation.

On education, Sugiono подчеркнул that Indonesia–Australia efforts to strengthen education cooperation are not part of Danantara’s investment scheme.

He said education cooperation is oriented more toward capacity building, such as expanding the presence of Australian campuses in Indonesia.

“Investment is in other areas. Education cooperation—for example—there are several Australian universities already here. That can be strengthened, whether that means adding more universities, more or less like that. Or student and teacher exchanges, and so on,” Sugiono said.
