Jakarta – The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Health Quarantine Office (BBKK) has intensified surveillance measures to prevent the entry of Hantavirus into Indonesia. The move specifically targets air travelers arriving from four countries where the virus has been recently identified.

“We are tightening our oversight of arrivals from nations with confirmed or identified Hantavirus cases,” stated Naning Nugrahini, Head of the Soekarno-Hatta BBKK, as reported by Antara on Wednesday.

The heightened scrutiny is currently focused on passengers originating from the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, and Panama. This policy follows a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the deaths of three cruise ship passengers linked to Hantavirus infections.

“Currently, we are applying extra vigilance to these four countries, particularly for direct flights to Soekarno-Hatta. However, we remain flexible and will update this list should new cases emerge elsewhere,” Naning added.

Authorities at Indonesia’s primary gateway have reinstated standard health protocols for international arrivals. The BBKK has outlined a multi-layered response, including on-site medical examinations and in-depth health screenings.

“Our readiness at Soekarno-Hatta begins with the health declaration forms integrated into the SatuSehat mobile application. This allows us to assess the risk profile of each flight,” Naning explained. “Upon disembarkation, we utilize thermal scanners and visual observation to detect symptoms.”

The airport has also designated specific evacuation routes for passengers suspected of carrying infectious diseases. Should a traveler be identified as a potential carrier, specialized protocols will be activated immediately.

“We have dedicated ambulances specifically for infectious diseases. This ensures that any referral to a medical facility is handled with the necessary containment measures,” she said.

Naning urged all air travelers to remain vigilant and adhere to health protocols. She noted that Hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with the urine, saliva, or droppings of infected rodents.

“The key to preventing transmission remains the strict adherence to health protocols and the maintenance of a strong immune system,” she concluded.
