Jakarta – Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has reinforced its international collaboration with Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs following a high-level meeting in Moscow aimed at combating transnational drug trafficking.

The Indonesian delegation, led by BNN chief Comr. Gen. Suyudi Ario Seto, met with Russian Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Zubov and Ivan Valentinovic Gorbunov, head of the Main Directorate for Drug Control. The meeting took place on Monday (June 22) in Moscow.

The engagement marks a strategic step by Indonesia to deepen cross-border cooperation in response to the growing complexity of international drug syndicates, including recent cases involving Russian nationals operating in Bali.

“In the meeting, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in combating narcotics-related transnational crimes for the 2026–2027 period through three key agreements,” BNN’s Public Relations Bureau said in a statement on Monday (June 29).

The first agreement focuses on strengthening surveillance in high-risk areas. Both parties agreed to intensify monitoring of migration flows in vulnerable locations such as Bali. This measure follows the discovery of Indonesia’s first mephedrone laboratory involving Russian citizens.

“Both sides agreed to enhance real-time intelligence sharing and reinforce coordination between law enforcement agencies and immigration authorities. Firm actions, including deportation, will be taken against foreign nationals proven to be involved in drug-related criminal networks,” the statement added.

The second point of agreement emphasizes collaboration in tackling digital crime. Indonesia and Russia plan to expand joint efforts in capacity building, particularly in digital forensics, cyber investigations, and tracking cryptocurrency transactions often used in laundering proceeds from drug trafficking.

The third agreement addresses the exchange of information on new psychoactive substances, which are increasingly disguised in electronic cigarettes. Law enforcement measures will be complemented by integrated public education programs aimed at prevention.
