JAKARTA, INDONESIANPOST.COM — The Philippines is reeling from the devastating impact of two consecutive typhoons, Kalmaegi and Fung-wong, which have collectively claimed 250 lives over the past week, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Typhoon Kalmaegi made landfall on November 4, unleashing deadly flash floods and landslides across the central Philippines. The typhoon has been identified as responsible for 232 fatalities and leaving 112 people missing.
Kalmaegi has emerged as the deadliest natural disaster worldwide in 2025, as reported by the EM-DAT disaster database.
The majority of casualties occurred in Cebu Province, a region still grappling with the aftermath of a 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on September 30, the NDRRMC reported.
On the same day, the Philippine Civil Defense Office confirmed that Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which struck Luzon Island on Sunday, resulted in at least 18 deaths.
Both storms forced the evacuation of millions of residents, destroying homes, farmland, and critical infrastructure such as roads and bridges, local officials revealed.
Notably, Fung-wong is the 21st tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, surpassing the country’s annual average of 20 typhoons. (Tempo/Bilah)
