IMCTC Launches Training Program for Imams and Preachers in the Maldives to Promote Moderate Religious Discourse
Malé, Maldives, Indonesianpost.com – Amid rising global security challenges and the evolving nature of extremism, military efforts alone are no longer sufficient to combat terrorism. Recognizing this, the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) has emphasized the need for a more comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy—one that includes intellectual engagement and addresses the root causes of extremist ideology.
As part of this broader vision, IMCTC officially launched the “Building the Capacity of Imams and Preachers” training program in the Maldives on Monday (5/5). The program will run until May 8, 2025, and aims to empower religious leaders to promote moderation and counteract radical narratives within their communities.
This initiative is a practical extension of IMCTC’s “Wasata” project—an anticipatory vision designed to strengthen moderate religious discourse by equipping local religious leadership with the tools they need to guide their societies effectively. Through tailored workshops and training sessions, participating imams and preachers are gaining skills in critical thinking, dialogue, and effective communication.

“Imams and preachers are not merely transmitters of religious knowledge—they are protectors of sound thought and defenders of moderation,” said an IMCTC spokesperson during the opening ceremony. “To fulfill this role, they must not only understand Islam deeply but also connect meaningfully with today’s youth.”
The program highlights the strategic importance of collaboration between governments and religious institutions in spreading moderate thought and building resilient communities. By investing in the academic and professional development of religious leaders, IMCTC seeks to enable them to better utilize modern platforms and present credible alternatives to extremist ideologies.
The Wasata initiative underscores a fundamental truth: while the ideological battle may be long, it remains the most decisive path to lasting victory. Through education, empowerment, and dialogue, IMCTC continues to champion the belief that a nation’s true defense lies in the strength of its moderate values. (Nabilah Hisan/Indonesianpost)
