’98 Riots Mass Rape Claims Still Under Scrutiny: Zon
Poland, Indonesianpost.com – Culture Minister Fadli Zon acknowledged that various crimes occurred during the 1998 riots in Jakarta, but cast doubt on the veracity of the alleged “mass rape” incident during that period.
Zon emphasized that the term “mass” requires solid and precise evidence, stressing the need for careful investigation of the incident, as it directly affects the nation’s reputation.
“Data and evidence must be handled with caution when addressing past events,” the minister stated on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Bali Indah Cultural Park in Strzelinko, Slupsk, Poland, on Monday.
He pointed out that the incident has been surrounded by conflicting reports, which has led to differing recollections, especially during the transitional period between the end of the New Order regime and the beginning of the Reform era in May 1998.
The minister acknowledged that sexual violence against women did occur during the riots but reiterated that the term “mass” requires a more thorough examination.

“I believe sexual assaults against women happened in the past and still occur today, but the use of the term ‘mass’ likely needs further investigation,” Zon added.
Zon stressed the importance of presenting accurate, credible data to verify the truth of the incident. He called for “authentic and precise information” to prevent potential harm to the nation’s reputation, given that, to date, no legal evidence has been presented to support the allegations.
He further stated that if the incident is proven, his ministry would fully support efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure they face appropriate legal consequences.
The controversy surrounding the alleged “mass rape” resurfaced in the public eye after Zon announced plans to release a newly revised history of Indonesia on August 17, 2025. (BL)
