- Riyad Mansour has been nominated to run for President of the 81st UN General Assembly session in 2026, the UNGA spokesperson said.
- The UN Secretariat received three nominations—Bangladesh, Cyprus and the State of Palestine—with the next UNGA leader to come from the Asia-Pacific Group under the rotation system.
- The election is scheduled for June 2, 2026, and Mansour is the only nominee so far to have submitted a vision statement outlining his priorities if elected.
The Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations (UN), Riyad Mansour, has been confirmed as one of the diplomats nominated to serve as President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 2026.
“The Secretariat has received three nominations for the position of President of the 81st session of the General Assembly … the three nominees are Md. Touhid Hossain (Bangladesh), Andreas S. Kakouris (Cyprus), and Riyad Mansour (State of Palestine),” spokesperson for the President of the UNGA La Neice Collins said in a statement on Tuesday.
Collins noted that the leadership for the upcoming UN General Assembly session will be selected from countries within the Asia-Pacific Group, in line with the organization’s regional rotation system.
She added that Mansour is the only candidate so far to have submitted a vision statement, outlining his priorities, objectives and the issues he would focus on if elected as President of the UNGA.
The election for the President of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to take place on June 2, 2026, at the UN General Assembly Hall, Collins said.
