Gaza has become the most dangerous place in the world for journalists and humanitarian workers, according to Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Speaking on Sunday (Jan. 25), Lazzarini revealed that more than 230 journalists have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the escalation of hostilities.

Citing UNRWA’s official website, Lazzarini emphasized that restrictions on journalists entering Gaza have worsened the spread of disinformation and extremist narratives. “Preventing journalists from entering Gaza further strengthens disinformation campaigns and extremist narratives,” he said.

The UN official described Palestinian journalists as “our eyes and ears” in documenting the horrors of war in Gaza. He praised their courage, resilience, and humanity in reporting under life-threatening conditions. “Palestinian journalists embody human strength and perseverance. They continue their work courageously amid unimaginable hardship,” Lazzarini added.

According to him, journalists perform their duty alongside humanitarian workers, both groups facing immense risks in the conflict zone. The continuous targeting and obstruction of their work, he warned, have deeply alarming implications for transparency and accountability in war reporting.

Lazzarini further stated that the ban on journalists entering Gaza aims to discredit firsthand reports and testimonies from international humanitarian organizations, while also degrading the dignity of Palestinian civilians. “Blocking journalists seeks to delegitimize the direct accounts of humanitarian organizations and undermine the dignity of Palestinians,” he concluded.
