Jakarta – A 53-year-old German national was found dead in the bathroom of his home on Jl. Kutat Lestari, Gang Pelanggi No. 14, in Sanur Kauh, South Denpasar, on Monday evening. Police suspect he died after being electrocuted by a faulty water heater.

The victim, identified by his initials PP, was discovered by his wife, YP, 54, a Thai national, at around 5:40 p.m. local time.

According to witness statements, the couple had been bathing in separate bathrooms at the time of the incident. YP grew concerned after her husband did not come out for some time.

When she checked the bathroom, she found PP motionless in a face-down kneeling position.

“The witness called out to the victim several times, but there was no response,” Denpasar Police spokesperson Iptu Gede Adi Saputra Jaya said on Tuesday.

Shocked by the situation, YP asked nearby residents for help. Several neighbors then assisted in moving the victim from the bathroom onto a bed.

During the evacuation, one resident said he felt an electric shock after touching the metal shower hose inside the bathroom. The incident strengthened suspicions that there had been an electrical fault at the scene.

Police officers who later examined the location said they found no signs of physical violence on the victim’s body.

Investigators did, however, find burn marks on the victim’s back. They also discovered what appeared to be pieces of skin attached to the shower hose.

“Our preliminary assessment is that the victim died from an electric shock caused by a short circuit in the water heater,” Adi said.

Police said the victim was naked when he was found and that his body had already become stiff.

After the evacuation, the body was taken by an ambulance from the Denpasar Disaster Mitigation Agency to Bali Mandara Hospital, where medical personnel later confirmed that the victim had died.
