Jakarta – Indonesia has strongly condemned Israel’s detention of humanitarian volunteers involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0 mission to Gaza, describing the action as a clear breach of international law.

Speaking in Tangerang on Sunday, Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the arrest and use of force against unarmed civilians participating in a humanitarian mission constituted a violation of internationally recognized legal norms.

“This is a violation of international law, as these civilians were engaged in delivering humanitarian aid to Palestine,” Sugiono said.

He emphasized that such actions undermine human dignity and must not be allowed to recur. According to him, the flotilla’s mission was purely humanitarian in nature and did not constitute any unlawful activity.

“This is an unacceptable act that must not happen again,” he added.

Sugiono also confirmed that the Indonesian government had successfully secured the release and repatriation of nine Indonesian nationals who had been detained by Israeli authorities during the operation.

He noted that the effort was made possible through coordinated diplomatic engagement, including support from partner countries, particularly Turkey.

“We express our appreciation to all participants involved in this humanitarian mission,” he said.

The nine Indonesian citizens arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Sunday afternoon after completing the repatriation process.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with Indonesian representatives abroad, facilitated the evacuation as part of its obligation to protect Indonesian citizens overseas.

The group departed Istanbul aboard an Emirates flight on Saturday (May 23) at 7:35 p.m. local time, transiting in Dubai before continuing their journey to Jakarta on Sunday (May 24) at 4:10 a.m., arriving at 3:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time.
