Indonesia’s major cities are expected to see mostly cloudy conditions with the potential for light rain on Sunday, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG weather forecaster Wahyu Anisa said in the agency’s broadcast that light-intensity rainfall could occur in Pekanbaru, Bengkulu, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Serang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Tanjung Selor, Surabaya, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Mamuju, Manokwari, Jayapura and Jayawijaya.

Meanwhile, Banda Aceh, Medan, Pontianak, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Padang, Semarang, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Denpasar, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Ambon and Sorong are forecast to experience thick cloud cover, with some areas potentially seeing mist or fog.

Jakarta and Nabire are expected to see moderate rain, while Merauke may experience thunderstorms.

BMKG said a combination of atmospheric dynamics was among the factors shaping the weather, after meteorological monitoring detected two cyclonic systems that could directly or indirectly influence rainfall potential across the country.

Tropical Cyclone Luana was observed over the Indian Ocean south of East Nusa Tenggara, with maximum wind speeds reaching 35 knots, moving toward the Indian Ocean south of Java.

Tropical Cyclone Seed 92B is predicted to be positioned around the Gulf of Carpentaria south of southern Papua and is expected to move into Australian territory within the next 48 hours.

BMKG’s meteorology team warned that the combined influence of these phenomena could increase the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

The agency urged the public to remain vigilant, noting that such conditions could also elevate the risk of hydro-meteorological disasters, including flooding, flash floods, tornado-like whirlwinds, landslides and other impacts, as the peak of the rainy season continues through February.
