- France may pursue legal action against Israel after French activists were allegedly abused during the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters.
- Footage and injury reports have prompted French authorities to consider legal steps, while activists plan lawsuits across several countries.
- The flotilla, which departed from Spain, was stopped by Israeli forces far from Gaza, leading to detentions and rising diplomatic tensions.
Jakarta – France is considering legal action against Israel following allegations of violence against activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), including several French nationals, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said.
“Beyond political condemnation, which is necessary, we must act because French citizens were affected,” Lecornu stated. “We cannot rule out referring all documented actions shown in the videos to our legal authorities. No one should be able to attack French citizens with impunity and without consequence.”
His remarks refer to footage published on May 20 by Israeli National Security official Itamar Ben-Gvir. The video appears to show Israeli security personnel forcing flotilla activists to kneel face down while restrained.
The Global Sumud Flotilla reported that approximately 30 activists suffered fractures, accusing Israeli forces of using excessive force during the interception of the humanitarian convoy.
According to FranceInfo, participants of the flotilla are preparing to file lawsuits against Israel in multiple jurisdictions over alleged violations during their detention.
The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid bound for Gaza, departed from Barcelona on April 15. On May 18, the vessels were intercepted in international waters roughly 250 nautical miles from the Gaza coast. All participants were detained before being deported by Israeli authorities.
